MLK 2 is a concert devoted to the life, work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. featuring the 80-voice World Village Gospel Choir. The concert includes contemporary and classic gospel music, music from Africa sung in Zulu and Xhosa, plus songs of change and social justice by Bob Marley and John Lennon. MLK 2 is presented at 8 p.m. Friday December 4th at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton St., with a pro band made up of Winnipeg’s finest musicians. Admission is $15, kids under 12 free.
In their brief history, World Village Gospel Choir has backed up Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame group Heart at the MTS Centre, been featured in a Vision TV documentary entitled Gospel to Go, twice performed live on a national APTN broadcast for Aboriginal Day Live, sang at Folklorama’s African pavilion, and performed with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Indeed, this has been another eventful year for this popular and soulful choir. In May the Choir was notified that it had received funding from FACTOR, the national body supporting recording of Canadian music. In July the group was invited to sing their worldbeat-inspired version of O Canada at the official Canada Day ceremonies at Assiniboine Park, with Mayor Brian Bowman, Premier Greg Selinger and Lt. Governor Janice Filmon. In October WVGC was in the recording studio to work on an original gospel tune by Co-Director Neil Weisensel. The song, entitled An Instrument (Show Love), was inspired by St. Francis of Assissi’s iconic writings, and will be available early in the new year.
